The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in Chechnya has completed its investigation into a plot to assassinate head of the republic Ramzan Kadyrov.

Charges will be soon be laid against three local residents: Aziz Alviyev, Beslan Zakaraev, and Shamkhan Magomadov. All three were members of the now defunct Vostok Battalion, a Russian special forces unit.

The three have admitted their guilt and, likely, the hearing of the criminal case will take place in a special order in one meeting.

Isa Yamadayev, the alleged mastermind behind the plot, may be tried in absentia. Authorities in Chechnya believe that he and his younger brother, Badrudi Yamadayev, were behind the failed plot.

In the beginning of April, a team of Chechen security forces flew to Dubai in an attempt to kidnap Yamadayev, but he had fled the country earlier.

According to the investigation, the suspects were planning to assassinate Kadyrov in the village of Benoy, in the Nozhay-Yurt District. Explosive devices were placed in several places where Kadyrov might have appeared.

Novaya Gazeta broke the story, and claimed that the head of Kadyrov’s administration, his nephew Islam Kadyrov, was indirectly involved in the plot. In March 2017, the military assistant to the head of Chechnya, Daniil Martynov, who is considered to be a close associate to Kadyrov, confirmed that an assassination attempt was indeed being prepared, and that the security service, which he overseed, had managed to foil it.
